How to Get TSA PreCheck...The Right Way!
One of the questions I am asked often is regarding TSA PreCheck. Anytime you are at an airport there is usually a shorter line at security on the TSA PreCheck lanes. As a traveler, I have been able to move through security in 1-2 minutes in many cases. The idea behind TSA PreCheck is not just the speed of moving through security but also not having to remove my electronic devices from my bag and not having to remove my shoes. All this results in a speedier process through the TSA security lines.
Some believe that TSA PreCheck is good for frequent travelers or business travelers. But that is not true. Some also believe that TSA PreCheck is something that is given to some travelers. That is also not true. TSA PreCheck is available to anyone who wants it and I highly suggest that even if you travel once a year, it is something that everyone should have. It removes one of the biggest areas of frustration when you travel and it makes your life easier. All for less than the price of 4 Starbucks coffee per year. You can apply for TSA PreCheck alone for $85 which helps you when you travel by air.
But there is a better way.
The best way to get TSA PreCheck is with Global Entry. When you apply for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck comes included and allows you to travel by air, land and sea. So what is Global Entry? Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States.
But what if you don't travel internationally? Should you still get Global Entry?
Yes. Global Entry does not require that you need to travel internationally. Of course if you do, it will decrease the time you spent at customs when you return back to the USA. But even if you do not travel internationally, you should get it. Once you get Global Entry, TSA PreCheck is included. All for the price of $100 for every 5 years. That is only $20 per year for both Global Entry & TSA PreCheck.
This is inexpensive and totally worth the money.
But what if I am not a citizen of the USA? Can I still get Global Entry?
Yes. There are many countries who have been added to the approved citizen list for Global Entry. At the time of this article the list of approved countries of which you can be a citizen of and still apply for Global Entry is as follows: Argentina, Colombia, Germany, India, Mexico, Panama, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan & United Kingdom.
